Disavowing Links

  1. You can find links that have been flagged as spam at http://Moz.com for your site.

  2. Download the links flagged as spam.

  3. Go through and make sure they are from sites that we do not want backlinking to our site. I'd run this link past your CMM or someone who is familiar with the website if you have any questions if they are in fact spammy backlinks or not. (I.e. some links on DCME's spam list were actually relevant for us)

  4. You can add all of the links to be disavowed. For efficiency I only uploaded the backlinks that had a spam score of over 50%, this can be found on the sheet you downloaded from Moz.

  5. You also have the option to disavow individual links OR at the domain level. With DCME I chose to upload on the domain level because the domains as a whole, had no reason to have backlinks to us. It is also recommended in one of the articles I am linking to below to ensure no bad backlinks are missed.

  6. Once you have categorized your links, add "domain:" (see example below) in front of all of the domains you'd like to disavow, and copy paste them into notepad. The disavow file MUST be a .txt file.

  7. You can choose to add "comments" to your disavow sheet, but Google doesn't read them lol.

  8. To upload your disavow file to Google go to: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/disavow-links-main

  9. Select the property and click "DISAVOW LINKS"

  10. You should receive an email from Google Search Console confirming everything went through!
